I am a printmaker/painter based in rural Northumberland. My etchings and paintings are inspired by my love of animals, the natural world and my fascination with the many and varied forms of wild and domestic creatures. My work is all based on drawing and observation, I try to concentrate on the character of the creature I depict, to show it's nature through it's pose and poise. I make small editions of etchings of animals in a sparse and focussed style. I like the balance between my subject and the space in which it sits, the space is just as important as the drawing. I exhibit these in many galleries throughout the country, have my work in several collections and have been selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition several times. I am fortunate enough to live near miles and miles of the country's most fantastic beaches and coast line.Because of this happy circumstance I have started working on a series of beach comber paintings. I have been discovering the massive variety in form and colour of the shells, seaweeds and creatures left by the tide. Drawing and painting from life and trying to capture these many subtle colours and shapes. They are all collected and assembled in the manner of a Victorian natural history enthusiast, or scattered across the picture plane as if left by the tide. I hope they convey a love of ambling along tidelines and pottering about the rockpools.
